IHY SCIENCE

Quick Links: WHI

The IHY has a set of primary objectives and we have established Five Science Goals. Scientists from each of the relevant scientific disciplines will participate in a wide variety of IHY Coordinated Investigation Programs (CIPs), driving towards a more complete understanding of heliophysical universal processes. We have divided the universal processes into five primary themes to facilitate analysis and discussion.

To determine which CIPs are already planned for IHY, visit the CIP home page for a listing of CIPS, or use the Interactive CIP Browser.

In support of the science activities, we have an active Observatory Development Program. Instrument deployment is currently underway, and will continue through (at least) 2008. Instrument PIs and host sites are still be sought for participation.

IHY Coordinated Investigation Programme (CIP) Website now ready! Register your CIPs today!
The IHY-UK team maintains the CIP Website and Database. If you have an idea or suggestion for scientific research or activities to be performed during IHY, please go to the site and enter the information as a CIP (CIPs can be modified and updated after submission). The CIPs are reviews and coordinated by the IHY Discipline Coordinators and will form the basis for the IHY scientific plan. We will be accepting CIPs through early 2007.

The List of IHY International Planning Teams and National Contacts is available in the "Organization" portion of the IHY Website

A number of our science coordination activities and other opportunities are listed on our Get Involved Page. Whether you're an active IHY participant or if you simply want to stay aware of our activities, this page has your information.

If you are interested in or think you might be interested in participating in IHY Science, History, or Outreach activities, please make an entry into the IHY Science Coordination Database when it becomes available in late February 2007. This database will serve as a means of tracking the activities and interests of our many participants. Our initiative is expanding to include scores of nations, so please register!

Please submit your comments or suggestions to improve the database to Barbara Thompson.

The Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC) provides a number of exciting tools and models which will be of great use for IHY science activities. The center currently offers a number of solar, heliospheric and magnetospheric models.

IAU Working Group on IHY

IHY activities were discussed at the 2006 IAU General Assembly in Prague, Czech Republic. Special Session 5, "Astronomy for the Developing World", featured a subsession on IHY and will publish a special proceedings volume in the journal "Advances in Space Research." The IAU Working Group on IHY meeting was chaired by David Webb and included presentations and extensive discussion from many IHY member states. All IHY Regions were represented!
