An article by MARK MOLDWIN and ENDAWOKE YIZENGAW, Institute

of Geophysics and Planetary Physics, University of California, Los Angeles; DEBORAH K. SCHERRER, Solar Center, Stanford University, Calif.; M. CRISTINA RABELLOSOARES, W. W. Hansen Experimental Physical Laboratory, Stanford University; PATRICIA REIFF, Rice Space Institute, Rice University, Houston, Tex.; and CAROLYN SUMNERS, Houston Museum of Natural Science, Tex. that appeared in the AGU Newspaper, Eos, vol. 89, no. 10, p. 99, 4 March 2008. It describes the Geophysics Information for Teachers (GIFT) workshop for Ethiopian high school physics educators organized on 10 November 2007 by the AGU Space Physics and Aeronomy Education and Public Outreach (SPA EPO) Committee in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa. The workshop was held in conjunction with the IHY-Africa Space Weather Science and Education Workshop.

Promoting Space Weather Studies in Eastern Europe and Western Asia
***************************************************
An article by NORMA B. CROSBY, Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy, Brussels and ELCHIN S. BABAYEV, Shamakhy Astrophysical Observatory, Baku, Azerbaijan that appeared in the AGU Newspaper Eos, vol. 89, no. 15, p. 143, 8 April 2008. It describes a regional network and an international refereed scientific journal, the Sun and Geosphere journal that have been established to promote space weather studies in southeastern and east central Europe and in the Caucasus region. The main impetus behind establishing the Balkan, Black Sea, and Caspian Sea Regional Network on Space Weather Studies is to strengthen activities in the region in the field of space science. All of this is being done under the umbrella of IHY.

"Strange Space Weather Over Africa": First Results of the IHY-Africa Space Weather Workshop
***************************************************
From the nasa.gov Headline: Something strange is happening in the atmosphere above Africa and researchers have converged on Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to discuss the phenomenon. The Africa Space Weather Workshop kicked off Nov. 12th with nearly 100 scientists and students in attendance. The strange phenomenon that brings all these people together is the ion plume "a newly discovered form of space weather," says University of Colorado atmospheric scientist and Workshop co-organizer Tim Fuller-Rowell.

Interim Report from the IHY US Education Advisory Committee
***************************************************
The Space Physics and Aeronomy Education and Public Outreach Committee of the American Geophysical Union (in spite of the name, a world-wide organization) is serving as the US Advisory Committee for Education and Public Outreach for the International Heliophysical Year (IHY). The committee, chaired by Deborah Scherrer of Stanford University, includes Cristina Rabello-Soares, the IHY International Coordinator for Education, plus several other individuals also directly involved in IHY activities. They have issued a very nice report that summarizes the Committee's major IHY activities during the first year of the IHY.

The report is available at: http://ihy2007.org/outreach/2008_epo.html

The Traveling SOHO SunWorks Exhibit
***************************************************
As reported previously, there is an art exhibit on the Sun called SunWorks that is touring the U.S. The 24 pieces in SunWorks were selected from over 500 submissions to the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory's "Sun Works" art contest that ran for 10 months and ended in March 2006. All entries had to have some thematic tie-in to the Sun. Images of all media were accepted from around the world. Artists were grouped by Grades 4-8; Grades 9-12, and adults with monthly prizes awarded in each group. The best of the best were selected; the pieces were sent to us; then we had them framed and mounted for SunWorks. Details on the exhibit and its travels are available at:

http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/sunworks/exhibit.html.

If you are interested in bringing SunWorks to your venue, please contact Steele Hill at steele.hill {at} gsfc.nasa.gov

Sun|trek, a New Educational Solar Website
***************************************************
Sun|trek is an exciting new website for school students and teachers about the Sun and its effect on the Earth. Sun|trek has been motivated and inspired by the fantastic images and movies of the Sun taken from space. It is narrated by solar guides (young solar researchers), who not only share the excitement that they feel about working with these solar space projects, but also say a bit about themselves, how they became interested in astronomy and what their other interests are. They are 'role models' who could inspire the younger students. The Sun|trek team is led by Helen Mason of the University of Cambridge, UK.

Details on Sun/Trek are available at: http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/outreach/index.html

Video: "Memory of the International Geophysical Years" by Dr. R. P. Kane
***************************************************
Dr. Rajaram Purushottam Kane is a recent recipient of an IGY Gold Club award. He was born in India in 1926 and moved to Brazil in 1978, to work in INPE (National Institute for Space Research). His institute prepared a video interview with him which has some excellent insights about both the past and the future, and includes a special greeting to IHY.

A Special Session of the AAS: The International Geophysical Year and the Dawn of Space-Based Astronomy
***************************************************
A special session organized by the Historical Astronomy Division (HAD) of the Amercian Astronomical Society was held in Austin TX on Tuesday, 8 January 2008. The description of the session said that it will look back over fifty years at several aspects of the beginning of the Space Age, including Project Moonwatch, the early days of Soviet Space astronomy and auroral and magnetospheric studies associated with the International Geophysical Year. The four speakers were Jay M. Pasachoff, Williams College, Joel M. Weisberg, Carleton College, William C. Keel, Univ. of Alabama and J. McKim Malville, Univ. of Colorado.

The IHY Schools Program Continues to be a Success!
***************************************************
The IHY Schools Program continues to be one of the most successful IHY programs. International schools have now been successfully run in North America (Boulder, CO, USA, August 2007), Asia-Pacific I (Kodaikanal Solar Observatory, India, December 2007), and Latin America (San Paulo, Brazil, February 2008). Two more schools are being planned for 2008: Asia-Pacific II in Beijing, China in October and Europe-Africa in Nsukka, Nigeria in November. Unfortunately, the Asia-Pacific III school planned for Malaysia in 2009 had to be cancelled due to funding problems.

The African school replaces that originally scheduled at the ICTP in Italy. ICTP is providing support for the new venue, as well as EOARD and the IHY Secretariat. The African school will feature internationally recognized researchers from many branches of heliophysics. The school will be held at the Centre for Basic Space Science, National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The application deadline was 30 April 2008. Please contact Dr. A. Babatunde Rabiu (tunderabiu {at} yahoo.com) for further information and see the website at: http://www.cbss-online.com/.

The IHY Schools Program website has been updated. Please see http://ihy2007.org/outreach/ihy_schools.shtml for current information.

The workshop structure will include plenary/full group discussion sessions in the mornings, and small group breakouts in the afternoon. Daily themes will include

¯ Characterizing the global, interconnected, (non-transient) heliosphere ¯ Analyzing energy transport/transient origins and impact ¯ Studying physics at boundaries throughout the heliosphere

Registration is now open at: http://www.hao.ucar.edu/forms/whidmaw_registration.html.

Anyone interested in working on WHI science is encouraged to attend. If you can't make it to the workshop, remote participation is possible -- please indicate your interest in this option on the registration form. Please note the registration deadline is July 31, but hotels must be booked immediately due to the Democratic National Congress meeting the same week in Denver.
